Artist Statement
I get bored by the ordinary. I embrace change and mobility within my everyday experiences.
Life is complicated, packed with things that we can and cannot control. It’s the uncontrollable
(or un-knowable) experiences and situations that I find most intriguing. I have been on a search
for what my complicated past may mean to me in the present. As a result, I’ve explored how
distance, time and place may be presented within my work.
Each of these works is a mono-print that represents a unique experience in time and space,
past and present. As shapes are formed by marks, some color emerges, while other spaces are
covered. Each layer in the prints represents a different point in time. As the layers are created,
experiences are captured and time is marked.
Physicality is also an important component within my work. I want my marks to have a gestural
quality. Gestures reflect physicality of my everyday surroundings and play a role in the work.
Every gesture that is created allows past and present experiences to show through or be hidden
underneath other moments. Each day I am interacting within or on my landscape as well as
interacting with people. These simple and sometimes chaotic experiences are the ones that I find
intriguing and want to explore. Making, combining, hiking, shifting, layering, pouring are all
processes that reflect how I think and interact with my surroundings.
